Smart Chick, Tamara, Wellons. The vocalist continues to light up the DMV skyline, promoting her latest album, Life Is, a project Tamara says is inspired by life experiences of motherhood, marriage and art. Hardly the complacent composition, Life Is takes listeners to audio extremes, seamlessly shifting from jazz to soul, then to house music and back. Tamara describes it as “soul music over this heavy driven rhythm”. Still, the innovative indie artist accredits much of the album to her introduction to house music just five years ago with producer and head of Osha Records, Osumade. “From that moment”, Tamara says, “Life Is started.”

Aside from her music, Tamara’s new DC event, Bare Voices, debuted last week; it was a hit! Bare Voices, Tamara says, is about “helping [singers] out of their comfort zones” and “baring souls”. Essentially, the event is an intimate, unabridged warm-up session for vocalists, one in which the each-one-teach-one philosophy is the key note to the host of harmonious voices that fill the space.

Tamara Wellons’ Bare Voices is about “lending skills to each other”, focusing on warm-up, breathing, technique and discussion about life, love and living to love one’s craft. No music, no mic, just bare voices.

It’s no wonder how Tamara dazzles us with hit singles such as Out of This World, while managing home life and reaching out to the community of artists around her. After all, she is a Smart Chick; isn’t that synonymous with “superwoman” or something?

A Smart Chick is a woman with the intelligence to be herself, and Tamara Wellons never hesitates to bare her voice and soul for the world to experience. We wanted to know what it means to Tamara to be a Smart Chick. “In addition to balancing this work and family life”, she said as her kids yelled for her, “being a Smart Chick is about having your goals in mind and [having] faith. The singer elaborates, saying that faith ” has been the thing that’s brought me this far…trust God…I know things are happening.”

This Smart Chick is on the go and is putting even more dreams into motion, staying faithful to her family, fans and the fusion of her independent artistry.
